The Yobe State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Habu Zarma, on Sunday said the electoral commission, INEC, due to security challenges in the state, had postponed elections indefinitely in 18 polling units in Geidam Local Government Area.
He said that the state capital that security challenges in the council area had scared adhoc staff from going to conduct election in the affected units on Saturday and Sunday.
“Election could not hold in those areas on Saturday and Sunday due to security challenges. The commissioner will meet to consider the position of the affected units,” the INEC official said.
9jaecho reports that rescheduled elections were ongoing in 18 polling units in Fika, Potiskum and Yunusari Local Government Areas on Sunday.
According to Mr. Zarma, the elections were shifted in 10 polling units in Fika, four in Potiskmum and four in Yunusari local government areas due to late delivery of electoral materials.
The elections were taking place peacefully in the affected polling units in the three local government areas except Geidam,” he said.
Meanwhile, the presidential and National Assembly elections were conducted peacefully in other council areas on Saturday across the state.
Yobe is one of the states most affected by the Boko Haram insurgency although the Nigerian military recently announced it had dislodged the insurgents from the state.
