Barring any last minute miracle, the State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obong Paul Ekpo,  is set to be returned as the Party helmsman for the second time in a row.

The State Caucus of the party are said to have endorsed Obong Ekpo, an indigene of Etinan for shown gallantry, charisma and trustworthiness in the discharge of his responsibilities since assumption of office four years ago.

Ekpo had met stiff challenge initially orchestrated by some party officials from Uyo federal constituency who argued that Uyo should be considered to produce the next chairman since Obong Ekpo was from Etinan Federal Constituency which already boasts of a speaker , Barr Onofiok Luke.

It was however argued that at a time when PDP is dire need of a comeback at the national level it was expected of states to present its most experienced hands to help in the rebuilding process.

“You know Ekpo is already familiar with the politics at the national level of our party, and with all the wealth of experience he has garnered, it would be a wrong judgement to present a fresher who may have to accumulate time to get introduced to the major players at the center,” a source at the state PDP headquarters told our reporter.

The source furthered that, “the commitment shown by Paul Ekpo, his resolute to be transparent and supportive to the party, above personal interest, projected him as the best man for the job.

Another reason cited was Mr Ekpo’s natural way of relating peacefully with his exco members and other members of the party in the state.

With the State Congress scheduled for today, it is expected that the delegates to the conference will merely follow the decision of the party in the state led by Governor Udom Emmanuel, and queue behind Obong Ekpo at the Uyo Township Stadium.
