Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has commissioned an Ultra-Modern Hatchery and Poultry Industry located at Mbiaya in Uruan Local Government Area of the State.
Inaugurating the Complex, Governor Emmanuel said the Hatchery which complements his administration’s huge investment in Cocoa production, is geared towards repositioning the State to join the league of producers and exporters of poultry, cocoa and other agricultural products and explained that the prevailing economic recession has made it expedient for the State and Country to look inwards for diversification of the economy for sustainability.
Governor Udom Emmanuel said the value chain of the investment which begins with the corn farmers would trigger down to the poultry farmers who would be opportune to dispose their products in the international market price adding that his administration is determined to ensure appropriate pricing for locally produced goods and services..
He announced that modalities have been put in place for a modern abattoir to be established as well as a storage facility for the poultry products saying the gesture is a bold step for the realisation of wealth creation, employment generation, sustainability and industrialisation blueprint of his administration for the people of the State and solicited for adequate security for the facility.
Governor Emmanuel who paid glowing tribute to his predecessor Senator Godswill Akpabio for conceptualising the world class poultry facility assured that in no distant time the people will reap from the numerous investment of the State government .
The state Governor expressed appreciation to Lecturers in the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Uyo for their contributions to the success of the project and specifically lauded Mbiaya Community for providing the land and their readiness to sacrifice for the development of the state.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Matthew Ekaette, who described the project as a watershed for Poultry Farmers in the state, said the hatchery is targeting at a monthly production of one million day old chicks and announced plans to set up a breeder farm and a Feed Mill at Abak Local Government Area adding that the farm would house about sixty thousand hens and that farmers have been trained to take up responsibility in available areas.
At the occasion, the Uruan Local Government Transition Committee Chairman, Mr Anthony Akan and an Elder statesman in the Mbiaya Community, Engr Offiong Akpabio, in their goodwill messages expressed appreciation to the Governor for bringing development to the area and assured of the Community’s determination to create enabling environment for the industry to thrive.
Engr Offong Akpabio appealed for inclusion of farmers of the catchment community in the training programme conducted by the facility as well as employment of Uruan people in the Poultry Industry.
Cultural Troupes and song rendition by Members of Dakkada Poultry Farmers Association added colour to the event.
