The Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel, has sued for understanding following the state government’s decision to extend the tenure of Local Government Transition Committees.
He stated this while briefing Government House correspondents in his office of Tuesday, saying that the measure is a stop gap arrangement supported by the country’s constitution to save cost and keep the system vibrant pending the availability of funds for the conduct of elections n for that tier of government.
Governor Emmanuel noted that “in view of the prevailing economic challenges, it would be counter-productive to source for funds and conduct elections when most of the Councils are unable to fulfil their basic obligations like payment of salaries.”
He emphasised that conducting elections for over 3,000 units in the state would require huge funds and that it would not be in the interest of the Local Government system to go for a loan facility for such exercise.
The Governor however called for understanding from the people, assuring that elections would be conducted for the Council Areas and that the government is planning towards that direction.
