The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA) has pledged support to the establishment of vigilante groups in the state as a measure aimed at supporting state and federal government’s efforts in strengthening security in rural communities of the state.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Onofiok Luke, disclosed this recently while playing host to the leadership and members of Mboho Ndito Nsit Worldwide, when they paid him a courtesy visit.
“When we resume from recess, we will look at giving legal backing to the formation of vigilante groups, and to strengthen them to secure our rural communities”.
Barr. Luke who was reacting to the recent unfortunate incident of pipe line explosion at Obotim Ikot Ekong in Nsit Ibom, said he was saddened by the development, and stressed the need for all hands to be on deck in ensuring the policing of rural communities in the state.
The Speaker said the proposed law will ensure that the Vigilante groups are made to work closely with the police and other security agencies in the state, and will involve Paramount rulers, clan heads, Village heads and other critical stakeholders at the grassroots who will be working in synergy to strengthen the security system.
He urged the group to help create a network of security-conscious youths across the state.
Barr. Luke commended members of the group for the visit, and charged the leadership to work towards advancing the economic and educational advancement of Nsit nation through scholarship sponsorship for the children of the area, and also enjoined them to encourage co-operative development in Nsit nation.
He thanked the group for their support to the Udom Emmanuel led administration, and urged them not to relent in supporting the government through positive sensitization of the people about government developmental activities in their various communities.
Earlier, the International President of the group, Obong Aniefiok Attah said they were in the assembly to show solidarity with their son, and Speaker of the State House of Assembly on his elevation as to the number three positions in the state.
He congratulated Rt. Hon. Luke, and pledged the unalloyed support of the group to him. Obong Attah used the opportunity to brief the speaker on the activities of the group as well as some projects earmarked for execution for the benefit of the people of Nsit nation.
