Akwa Ibom State Government has called on proprietors of Mission Schools to begin the process of handing over the institutions to government to allow for effective administration and sustainable development in the Schools.
The State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, made the call when he attended a Special thanksgiving Service to commemorate the one hundred and eleventh anniversary of Methodist Boys High School, Oron held at the school promises.
According to him, “The school which is the legacy of the missionaries who arrived the country in the fifties, is the seventh oldest institution in the country and the second in the South Region. It deserves the description of the best in terms of relics and historical artefacts of the founders.”
He announced plans to establish Sports Academy in the Senior Science College, Oron Local Government Area explaining that the Academy would have been sited at the Methodist Boys High School except for the bad topography of the institution which does not allow for such development.
Governor Emmanuel charged Old boys of the institution to establish a portal to enable people elsewhere log in and access information about the school saying this would attract support from organisations who may assist in the development of the institution.
He congratulated the Old boys, staff, students and management of the school for sustaining the vision of Reverend Nathaniel Boocook who founded the Methodist Boys High School, Oron.
An Old boy of the school and Commissioner for Local Government And Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Victor Antai pledged to provide the school with the Online Portal.
Earlier in an homily, the Bishop Methodist Church Nigeria, Oron Diocese Right Reverend Effiong Esedeke, an Old boy of the school, narrated how the founding fathers of the institution arrived James town for missionary work and decided to establish the institution for human development saying the school later became a tourist site of government and civilization sprouted from there to the hinted land.
The man of God who preached on the theme “How Christian Should Conduct Themselves” took his text from first Timothy Chapter two verses one through two and called on all to intercede for those in positions of Authority maintaining that this would guard them from the snares of the devil which could make them take decisions that impact negatively on the people.
He condemned in strong terms the pull him down syndrome which he said is the bane of modern day society and stated that this holds the reason for delayed progress and conflicts.
Bishop Esedeke congratulated the Governor on his elevation and affirmed that it was a divine mandate that crowned him the victory.
He sued for support to make the citadel of learning the pride of educational institutions in the country.
At the thanksgiving Service, prayers were offered to Old boys of the institution, State Government and the Country while the Principal of the school Mrs Uduak Bassey presented a souvenir to the state Governor Mr Udom Emmanuel.
