The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA) has congratulated Governor Udom Emmanuel and Akwa Ibom people on the 29th anniversary of the state creation.

The House’ decision was sequel to information brought before it by the member representing Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Barr. Ime Okon.

In a 6-point resolution passed on Thursday, the lawmakers appreciated the efforts and contributions of successive administrations in the state and the value they have added to the progress and development of Akwa Ibom since its creation.

The resolutions read: “The Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly congratulates the executive governor of Akwa Ibom state, His Excellency Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, and the people of the state on the 29th anniversary of the creation of the state.

“The House appreciates the efforts and contributions of successive governments in the state and the values they have added to the progress and development of Akwa Ibom state

“The house recognizes the founding fathers and leaders of the state and appreciates their efforts in the struggle for the creation of the state and promise that their efforts will not be in vain.

“The House urges the people of Akwa Ibom state to do all they can to ensure unity and eschew divisive tendencies.

“The House should put modalities in place to immortalize the names of all founding fathers and those who led the struggle for the creation of Akwa Ibom state.

“That the federal government should make its presence in the state to be commensurate with the contributions of the state to the economic fortunes of the country.

Members in their contribution acknowledged the role played by the founding fathers of the state and founding fathers, saying Akwa Ibom has had enough reasons to celebrate.

Reacting, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke, while congratulating the people of the state on the celebration, enjoined all not to lose faith in “our collective ability to make Akwa Ibom Africa’s next destination.”

He said: “On a day like this, we must reflect on the need to build on the faith which was sown by our founding fathers into the very foundation of our statehood. We must reflect on their sacrifices, their vision, and the very bond of brotherhood which inspired their success. Our generation must serve as a model to upcoming generations who will seek something positive that we left behind, something on which they could consolidate. We must answer to the call of unity, and leave behind hate and virulent courses. We must build on our history of resilience and hard work, diligence and fair play, as we look to creating an Akwa Ibom state where every man and woman, children and visitors will be proud to associate with.

The Speaker used the opportunity to call on the youths in the state to step up to the challenge of setting a new agenda that will propel Akwa Ibom to greatness.

He noted that “we have fared well in the last 29 years, but there is yet enormous room for us to enlarge our coasts, swell our barns, and multiply our yields. We must not lose faith in our collective ability to make Akwa Ibom Africa’s next destination”.
